About the product

The IS-pro Microbiota can be used for allround detection of bacteria for research purposes only. This kit enables to accelerate the research process by providing fast and accurate answers and it can be used also with small sample sets.

Moreover, it has been specifically optimized and tested for a number of different niches:

Gut

Applications include human studies, especially where (between hospital) reproducibility is important or to generalize results into a clinical diagnostic application. Most notably, the kit has been extensively validated for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and it can now accurately identify such condition by characterising the patient’s gut microbiota composition. Moreover, the IS-pro Microbiota is also ideally suited to applications whereby results on microbiota composition are needed in a timely manner, for instance in monitoring the effect of Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT).

Skin

The kit can be used to perform research studies about cosmetics, skin disorders and effects of personal hygiene practices.

Oral

Potential applications include rapid characterization of all bacteria in the oral cavity, ranging from paradontitis to peri-implantitis.

Others

Further applications exist in a variety of research areas, including animal-based research and other sample types such as respiratory and nasopharynx.

Specifications

The IS-pro Microbiota is intended to be used for detection and identification of bacteria isolated for research purposes only. Bacteria can be relatively quantified, based on their proportion of the total bacterial population within a specimen. IS-pro Microbiota is used by professional user, not for self-testing.

Use Cases

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

The IS-pro Microbiota has been used extensively in researching on IBD. Large cohorts of children and adults in different phases of their disease (exacerbation/remission) have been performed. Moreover, as an outcome of the MODAPEP project, inBiome developed a test for research purposes that is paving the way for doctors to identify patients susceptible to an exacerbation – in time to treat the disease before the symptoms flare up.

Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT)

inBiome performed a study on the impact of FMT in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) patients by using the IS-pro Microbiota. Results showed that the therapy effect on symptoms varies and depends on the specific donor. Moreover, by monitoring the composition of patients’ gut microbiota, inBiome was able to assess the engraftment of the transplant feces and link it to effects on wellbeing.

Skin; Hygiene experiments

To understand what are the effects of cosmetic products such as soap and deodorants on the microbiota, inBiome performed microbial analysis on the skin using the IS-pro Microbiota. Results showed that the microbiota composition of different body sites changed over time, but overall remained healthy, meaning that cosmetic products do not have a detrimental effect on skin microbiota.
